Program in brief
Researchers Abroad (Tutkijat maailmalle) program provides grants for research in technology and economics abroad. The purpose of the program is to support ambitious technology or economics researchers to conduct research at a high-level foreign university or research institute. Applicants must have at least a master’s degree, but the grant may also be suitable for an early postdoc. Researchers working in companies can also apply for a grant.
The foundations’ common goal is to improve the conditions for Finnish industry and business by encouraging researchers’ internationalization and career development in the fields of business and technology.
The foundations funding the Researchers Abroad program are flexible donors. We always strive to realize a valuable opportunity for international research cooperation. If necessary, changes can be made to the initial timetable of the exchange if, for example, the global or personal situation requires it.
Application information
Next application period is open from 1st of March until 12th of April 2024. Applying for the grant is done electronically at the homepage. Applicants must be Finnish citizens or have permanent residence in Finland. Grants will not be awarded for medical or architectural research.
A total of EUR 450,000 is available each year to cover research grants abroad. The amount to be awarded is primarily intended to cover the additional costs of a 6-12 month continuous research visit, such as travel, moving and housing expenses, school fees for children and insurance costs. A working grant to cover the cost of living may also be included if the applicant does not have any other means of subsistence, such as salary paid by the host institution or a Finnish employer. The cost estimate submitted by the applicant will be taken into consideration, but the grant may be awarded smaller than the amount requested. The maximum amount for a grant is EUR 50 000.
In addition to the research plan, the application must be accompanied by a one page project description, in which the applicant justifies the importance of the visit both from his / her own point of view and from the point of view of the research. The total size of the attached printout must not exceed ten pages. The referee attaches the recommendation directly to the application electronically and it is not included in the attachments.
The grant is subject to a letter of invitation or acceptance from the host research institute or university. The grant application must be sent with appendices by 23:59 pm on the closing date of the application period. Recommendation should be submitted within 7 days after the end of application period.
Instructions for filling out the application
